Electric power transmission towers are of great importance as structures. These large lattice Atlases support high-voltage transmission lines that carry the power over long distances from production sites to the users.

It is to these made-of-steel hard workers that we owe the light in our refrigerator when, under the veil of night, we sneak for a snack. Their failure may lead to power cuts and therefore disrupt the day-to-day life of people as well as whole industries dependent on electricity.

The construction of these towers is quite a task and requires rigorous compliance with the tower erection methodology.

Steel construction requires an exhaustive and precise detailing project to transform design sketches and specifications into drawings, lists, and CNC (Computer Numeric Controlled) files for fabrication and construction.

For that, we develop a detailed 3D BIM model that comprises every single structural steel part of the project. From this model, we are able to produce Workshop and Assembly Drawings, Erection Drawings, Bolt Lists, and CNC files.

Steel detailing

Structural steel detailing is a critical process of structural engineering and demands perfect accuracy. A small mistake in data files can lead to mismatches at the site while assembling and will also blow up the cost if any steel part needs to be re-fabricated or field-modified due to design or detailing errors.

Steel detailing involves the creation of detailed drawings for fabricators and contractors and includes plans, estimates, and other reports. The process involves two main types of drawings—Shop Drawings and General Arrangement Drawings.

Shop drawings specify every minuscule detail of an individual steel piece or component (columns, beams, plates, trusses, braces, etc.) that needs to be made by a steel fabricator.

Erection (General Arrangement) drawings portray dimensioned plans and specify the location of each steel component within the overall structure. These drawings include detailed and specific information about the position of each component, bolt, anchor, or welding spot.

To extract detailed drawings for steel fabricators and on-site workers directly from the 3D model we use modern design software such as Tekla Structures or Advance Steel. This allows us to detect all collisions in the model automatically and eliminate them guaranteeing assembly accuracy. Bolt clearance and hole-to-edge/hole-to-hole distances are checked as well — which is especially critical for this type of structure. Modern software also allows adding all the dimensions at the most appropriate and readable place automatically, which prevents human mistakes on the construction site.

All the project documentation stays connected to the 3D model. If needed, we can:

  • Update drawings with a single click – dimensions will also adjust to changes;
  • Generate any type of BOM in formats Excel, PDF, text file, etc.;
  • Generate CNC files with a click of a button. DSTV files for plates and profiles, DXF files for plates. IFC files can be generated for use by newer CNC machines.
